According to OSHA, all persons who will operate a forklift must be trained and pass an operator evaluation before being allowed to use one in the workplace. If someone who is operating a forklift isn’t fully certified, OSHA can impose a $7,000 fine for each untrained operator. To minimize the number of injuries in the workplace, it is important that all employees follow OSHA forklift rules and regulations.     

Below are some of the OSHA operating rules and regulations that must be followed:

• Only drivers authorized by the employer, licensed and trained in the safe operation will be permitted to operate such vehicles.
• Drivers will check the vehicle at least once per shift, and if it is found to be unsafe, the matter will be reported immediately and the vehicle will not be put in service again until it has been made safe.
• Vehicles will not exceed authorized or safe speed, always maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. 
• Stunt driving and horseplay are prohibited.
• A loaded vehicle will not be moved until the load is safe and secure. 
• Prior to driving onto trucks, trailers and railroad cars, their flooring will be checked for breaks and other structural weaknesses.

Since all employees need to be re-certified every three years, employees will stay up-to-date with equipment safety regulations and procedures.
